Dash Blender EXACTLY Like Vitamix Blender, Creamy Cauliflower Soup Recipe

Now that I've had my Dash blender for a couple of weeks, I have a little more to say about it.

The Lid

The lid is not super easy to get off, but it's not HARD to get off, either. This is one of the major things that folks seem to be complaining about. I really don't understand all the bitching and moaning: you just slide it up using your thumbs. #firstworldproblems

Soup Preset

I've used the soup preset twice now and it's great. It basically purées your pre-cooked ingredients at high speed for 8 minutes so the soup is hot and velvety-smooth. On my second soup, I didn't have the patience to wait the 8 minutes, and it started overflowing anyway (see #5 below), so I cut it short.

This is the soup I made. It was outstanding! I added cashews based on another vegan recipe I found, and while they do add a nice buttery creaminess to the soup, they are really not necessary.

(Almost) Paul Bertolli's Cauliflower Soup

Originally from Food52, tweaked slightly

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion (6 ounces), sliced thin
  • 1 head very fresh cauliflower (about 1-1/2 pounds), broken into large florets
  • 1/4 C raw unsalted cashews (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 5 1/2 cups water, divided
  • Extra virgin olive oil, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  1. Warm the olive oil in a heavy-bottomed pan. Sweat the onion in the olive oil over low heat without letting it brown for 15 minutes.
  2. Add the cauliflower, salt to taste, and 1/2 cup water. Raise the heat slightly, cover the pot tightly and stew the cauliflower for 15 to 18 minutes, or until tender. If you were in a rush, you could also steam the cauliflower in the microwave while sweating the onions.
  3. Add another 4 1/2 cups hot water, bring to a low simmer and cook an additional 20 minutes uncovered. I added a little bit of "Better than Bouillon" to give it a bit more flavor, but feel free to omit.
  4. Add cashews to mixture and stir in.
  5. Purée half of the soup in a blender to a very smooth, creamy consistency, then purée the other half (I found that the whole thing was slightly too much for my Dash pitcher to hold and it foamed out the top). Let the soup stand for 20 minutes. In this time it will thicken slightly.
  6. Add 1/2 C hot water if you want a thinner soup.
  7. Serve hot, drizzled with a thin stream of extra-virgin olive oil and freshly ground black pepper. You might also want to try a dash of nutmeg or white pepper.

Dash Blender Initial Thoughts

I recently got a divorce. I also recently got a new blender.

I got the blender because I'd grown accustomed to having a Vitamix at my disposal, and now that I didn't have it anymore, I was finding myself growing increasingly annoyed at the fact that I could no longer make homemade almond milk or strawberry-spinach smoothies.

I've spent the last few months re-stocking my house, buying new shower curtains, chairs, a couch, a bed... you name it: I needed it. The blender is probably my last of the post divorce replacement purchases, and I've only had it a day, but I'm so glad I made it!

I found this new-ish blender that seems to be a pretty spot-on low-end replica of the Vitamix--the Dash.

Is The Dash Blender Secretly Made by Vitamix Inc?

The whole thing HAS to be made by Vitamix Inc. or they'd be screaming bloody murder about patent infringement. The pitcher is almost identical. The removable plug for the pitcher is almost identical. The tamper is almost identical. The fittings are metal--hell, the Vitamix pitcher even fits on the Dash! The blades are almost identical with a few slight tweaks. The motor is almost identical, if not slightly more powerful.

I do not know that this is true, but as someone who's been involved in product development in my career, I can imagine Vitamix Inc.'s motivation: if they chose to sell a lower end model under the Vitamix brand, it would completely kill their high end consumer sales. Who would spend XX if they could get away with only spending YY? So they split it off and created a whole new brand, ultimately owned by the parent, and the two streams remain separate. The low end product competes with the under $200 blenders and the high end competes with the higher end models out there.

The Dash Blender Is Probably Not Secretly Made by Vitamix Inc.

OK, scratch that. Now that I look at their entire product range more closely, I'd be surprised if it actually were a Vitamix company... there's a lot listed that is foreign to VM. Interesting. So maybe this is really just a fantastic rip-off. From the looks of things, I'd say that the company specializes in copies of high end machines, trying to democratize them.

Maybe they are licensing the patents? Maybe the Vitamix patents ran out? Who knows.

I watched the side by side comparisons on YouTube, but those people are usually selling Vitamixes, and so may have a vested interest in doing slightly skewed tests. I'm pretty glad I ignored them, because for what I'm doing, this model (so far) works like a charm.

What I would advise for all Vitamix converts out there is to skip the presets for now. They work pretty well for set and forget things, but they might not get things to your ideal consistency. That's why there's also a manual setting with speed adjustments just like your VM has, and that works pretty well. I've been using that to reach my preferred consistency with great results.

My First Test: Simple Smoothie

My first test was to make a simple yogurt and frozen fruit smoothie using the preset Smoothie button. I put the liquid & yogurt in first, frozen fruit next. Used the preset. It was fine afterward but I realized I'd wanted to add some ground chia so I had to blend it a bit longer and it was just fine and dandy. A fab simple smoothie.

My Second Test: Brazil Nut Milk

My second test was out of left field: who makes Brazil nut milk, anyway? My sister brought me a gorgeously rich and creamy brazil nut milk drink from Miami and I wish I'd made a photo of the bottle before recycling it because now I can't stop dreaming of how to re-create it. So I tried.

I used this recipe and the Dash's "Puree" setting, and about another 30 seconds on a higher speed manual run. I do not yet own a nut milk bag so just wound up leaving the solids in my drink, which makes it grittier than you'd like but hey, fiber is a nutrient so I'm running with it, at least for today. A lesser machine would have left me with small chunks, but so far I have not found a single one, and I'm drinking it unfiltered, so that's a pretty good indicator of how well it's working.

Raspberry Seeds

They say that the ultimate test of a blender is in blending raspberry seeds. Flax Seeds are a close second, but I digress. Today I will go to the store and get my hands on a pound of frozen raspberries and give it a whirl so to speak.

Update: I forgot that I was supposed to be doing a test of the raspberry seed pulverizing abilities and added a ton of ground flaxseeds to my first raspberry smoothie at the last minute, so I'll have to re-do it. D'oh!

Will post a more indepth review later on and/or adjust this post should my opinion change.

Review: Pure Madness Truffles

So, I got a box of Pure Madness chocolate truffles sent in the mail (thanks, guys!), so I decided to give them a whirl. Being generous, I thought I'd share them with my husband.

Also, since I am doing the 4-Hour Body diet, I had to eat them all in one insanely decadent day. It was a box of 9, so that's a generous 4 1/2 chocolates each to be savored and devoured without much ado.

The truffles are absolutely gorgeous in the promo photos, but the first thing I noticed was that a bunch of the fancy-schmancy and obviously very fragile toppings had fallen off in the mail! They were packed very well, so maybe they were jostled a bit too much by my doorman? I didn't take a photo since it was a little disappointing... they were still pretty, just not as photo-shoot sexy as they would have been had I bought them from a local chocolatier.

On to the taste: what can I say? The dark chocolate truffles had awesome, smooth, and intensely chocolatey flava. Most excellent truffles! Highly recommended!

Tasting Highlights

Sea Salt Caramel - the chocolate was very smooth and the saltiness was a delectable counterpoint

Espresso - great coffee taste!

Hazelnut - something about hazelnut and chocolate together takes me to a higher plane

In A Nutshell

Living in NYC, I might opt to go to a local guy rather than buy them online... but the Pure Madness chocolates were outstanding enough to send as gifts for the holidays. If I didn't live here, I'd totally indulge!

Hendricks Gin and Limeade

I originally had this at Tom & Jerry's in SoHo (AKA 288 Bar) a few years ago, and it's one of the very best summertime cocktails, ever, IMHO.

I tried to recreate it and think I did a pretty reasonable job of it. Even thought today is a blustery winter day.

1 oz Hendricks Gin
1/2 lime, juiced
1T superfine sugar
five cucumber slices
ice cubes

Squeeze lime into a cocktail glass. Add water and sugar, stir. Add gin, ice cubes, and garnish with cucumber slices.

Healthy Steps Ice Cream Scoop

OK, so I've got ice cream on the brain today because I started thinking of Ben and Jerry's. I even vowed to devour a pint of Oatmeal Cookie Chunk for lunch. It is because of these things that I want this handy gadget: the Healthy Steps Ice Cream Scoop that pulls out a perfect portion from your pint and not a smidgen more. That way I will consume only 250 calories of my treat and have more for later days. I still consume all the calories but at least I've spread it out over a week, and that helps me to be healthy, right?

I'm reading reviews of other Healthy Steps products and people seem to have mixed reviews. Any thoughts?

Lunch Will Be: Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk

I can eat an entire pint of ice cream within 20 minutes. No joke. Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk is my absolute favorite. Its creamy, cinnamony awesomeness takes me to a happy place with memories of oatmeal cookies, ice cream treats, and maternal love.

If you've never had it look here for a store near you...

OMG they have it at Food Emporium, not three super walkable blocks away! Who needs lunch when they can consume 250 calories of cream and sugar instead? Today's a holiday, and I totally deserve it.
